Is central heating service is essential

]]>

A central heating system will create a warm temperature to the whole interior of a building from a point to multiple rooms. This system may combine with the other system in order to control the building climate that will convert the whole system into a HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning system). If you have heating system you should have a central heating service carried out regularly. It is made compulsory by law that the central heating system should be regularly serviced if the property is let out for rental purposes. It is for your benefit that this procedure is insisting to carry out annually which involves many reasons.

Safety is the main reason why it is needed regularly as a faulty boiler can result in carbon monoxide leaking out into the home environment. Carbon monoxide can lead to extreme illness and even death for humans and animals living in the house and if you try to save money by avoiding the central heating service is not advisable. As carbon monoxide gas has no odour and shape, it is invisible to all of the senses and we cannot see, taste or smell it and only after suffering from any kind of illness you will be aware of its leaking. So you have to think whether you have to risk you and your family’s health and well being by skipping the service of your central heating system.

It is obvious that when you service your boiler regularly then it will increase its efficiency which will in turn save money in the long run. It will also cut your energy bills which also helpful to the environment too and increase your green credentials. While hiring any company for your central heating service and you have to ask before hand exactly what will be done during the procedure. There are chances that there may be some untrained trade men may simply carry out a safety check without a proper inspection and cleaning. So make sure that you are hiring only professionalized and trained one who will stripped down your boiler and the major components will be cleaned and tested which will take at least an hour to complete.

You should service your boiler regularly yearly once and the services should be especially important if you have a condensing boiler. The reason is that these feature condensate traps which must be cleaned out once a year. Try to choose a plumbing firm which have licensed and insured so that if there is any problem after the trade men has left, you will be covered for this.

Energy Saving Week – Tips for Saving Energy Around the Home

Edit Article |

]]>

Monday 25th to Sunday 31st October 2010 is Energy Saving Week, organised by the Energy Saving Trust, one of the UK’s leading organisations set up to address the damaging effects of climate change.

Every household in the UK creates five and half tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year – enough to fill a hot air balloon and almost twice as much as emitted by an average car.

Now in its 14th year, the aim of this annual campaign is to help and encourage people to save energy and reduce their carbon emissions. All week we’ll be highlighting different ways in which you can reduce and manage energy usage in the home. As well as the positive effects on the environment, they will also help save you money on your energy bills.

To start things off we have compiled a list of top tips as recommended by the Energy Saving Trust.

In one week a dripping hot water tap wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they’re fully turned off.
Turn your central heating thermostat down by one degree and don’t heat rooms when you are not using them.
Eliminate draughts and wasted heat by installing a cheap, easy-to-fix brush or PVC seal on your exterior doors. Letterboxes and keyholes should be covered too.
Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat needn’t be higher than 60˚C.
Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you’re using an electric kettle).
Don’t leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily.
Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors.
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Insulating your loft is one of the simplest ways to save energy – you can even install it yourself. Insulate an empty loft today, and in a year you could save around £145 or £40 if you’re topping up.
If your boiler is over 15 years old it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing an old boiler with an efficient new one could reduce your gas bill by over £300 a year. A new Alpha CDC combi boiler now comes with a standard 5 year guarantee.

Heating systems are designed to be energy efficient and still keep your house warm. There are a variety of types that can be used, and you can find one that will suit your needs and budget.

The gas combi boilers are one of the most popular ones. The provide hot water as well as heat to a radiator. It can be cheaper to install then other type, s and if you use more then one boiler, you can be able to customize the climate in different parts of the house, as well ad provide yourself with more hot water when you want it.

Many of the gas combi boilers can be used with natural or propane and can be fitted to flues that are as large as 60 meters with some models. There are also electronic settings that can be adjusted for your own comfort, and some can even learn to only be in using hours when you need it to limit the amount of energy you consume. Maintenance is easy to do, since there is a fault diagnostic that will help you with the system. These can be adapted to solar panels, which can also help limit the energy you need.

There is also underfloor heating that you can choose. The electric type places mats under the flooring and is controlled by a a panel. This is especially useful in areas that have tile, such as the kitchen and the bathroom, and can be thermostat controlled. They do work very well, and do provide heat to the home.

The hot water underfloor heating means that there are no radiators, which allows you to have more room to live in. This type uses a low temperature hot water to make the heating work, and it allows the heat to rise and circulate without the use of air. It also eliminates cold spots in the room since it utilizes the space beneath the floor, so it covers a larger area. The installation cost to these is similar to a radiator type, and this is a good choice for those that suffer from allergies and asthma since there is no dust being circulated due to not having to rely on air to make the heat.

You may also find that a space heater will suit your needs, due to space constraints, or needing it in a different area. These can be ran by electricity, or gas. There are even those that mount into the ceiling, or those that are designed to heat a porch or patio. While these are effective, they are not the most energy saving types, although they are the most affordable and adaptable.

You do need to have the systems installed by a professional and registered engineer. They can help you determine which system is best for you, and how effective they will be. They can also answer any questions you may have and be able to educate you on the different kinds and which will provide you with the best energy saving option.

Heating systems do make your home more comfortable and keep you from being cold. Many people feel these are a necessity and finding the one that fits the best for your home while saving energy, and you money, can make it better for your pocketbook and the environment.

10 Ideas on How to Turn Things Around

Before going green, get energy efficient, and save yourselves some money.

If going green still seems a bit of a chore, you can always start by getting more energy efficient. Energy efficiency is all about doing the right thing, and finding practical ways to reduce your energy consumption. Today, using less energy not only helps fight the effects of global warming, but it can also help you to reduce your bills.

Here is our top 10 energy saving ideas:

1. Heating – Turning your thermostat down by 1?, and having Central Heating Maintenance carried out could save you up to 10% off your heating bill.

2. Lighting – Low energy light bulbs last up to 15 times longer than traditional bulbs and use 80% less electricity.

3. Cooking – Remember to cover saucepans with lids to ensure the heat is kept in. You may also find you don’t need the heat as high with the lid on.

4. Appliances – Don’t leave the television on standby as this wastes energy.

5. Bathing – Take a shower instead of a bath, and ensuring you have the correct Boiler Care carried out. An ordinary shower will use a third of the hot water needed for a bath.

6. Cavity Wall – Installing cavity wall insulation could save you up to £235* a year.

7. Loft Insulation – Up to 25% of heat is lost through your roof. Save as much as £90* a year by insulating your loft to 25cm*

8. Washing Machines – An energy efficient washing machine could use up to 33% less energy a year.

9. Fridges – An A-rated fridge-freezer is more energy efficient than other fridge-freezers.

10. Dishwashing – A new energy efficient dishwasher uses 60% of the energy of a typical old one.

Bonus tip: Finding a cheaper Electricity Supplier would help too.

*The cost savings shown are approximate, are provided for illustrative purposes only and are based on a gas heated semi-detached house with three bedrooms. Savings assume a gas price of 2.57p/kWh with gas consumption, of 31,700 units per annum (prior to installing the insulation measures). Individual savings may vary depending on type, age, main heating fuel of your home or if you choose to take increased warmth following installation of the measures.

Green energy is derived from clean renewable sources such as solar, wind, water and waste which do not generate greenhouse gas emissions.

How to Make Big Cuts in the Energy you Use in your Home, and your Energy Bills

]]>

Concern over energy consumption has grown greatly in recent years. Gas and electricity prices have been at record highs, hitting homeowners in their pockets. Plus there is a growing realisation amongst the general public that our energy consumption is causing global warming, which is leading to growing problems with our climate. In a recent Henley Centre survey, over 62% of respondents said that climate change is the biggest single problem facing the world today.

We use a great deal of energy in our homes. Our homes account for over a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in northern countries like the UK. However, reducing your home’s energy consumption is in most cases quite easy. It can also be very lucrative: some of the major actions you can take to reduce your home’s energy consumption pay back very quickly, and so you soon start saving a small fortune. There are 4 or 5 simple measures that almost every householder should focus on.

1.Insulate your home. By keeping more of the warmth in your home in winter, you will save a small fortune on your heating bills. The most common types on insulation to install are in the loft and also in the gap between your external walls (called ‘cavity wall insulation’). You can also insulate your floors and walls. Not only will this save you money, but your home will be more comfortable in winter and cooler in summer. Plus in the UK, because the government subsidises insulation, the investment needed will normally payback in under 2 years. Moreover, on average you will be preventing 1 to 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted each year.

2.Upgrade to a super-efficient condensing boiler. Your boiler is the main energy user in the house. Modern condensing boilers are far more efficient than some models made even 5 years ago. They use far less gas, and can save you up to 40% off your heating bills as a result. They last for around 15 years so the savings really add up over time. Plus by doing this you are saving an estimated 1.25 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

3.Replace your light bulbs with low energy bulbs. These use up to 80% less electricity used by traditional incandescent bulbs, and are now indistinguishable in terms of the light they emit. Plus they last up to 10 times longer. So as well as cutting your electricity bills, you don’t have to get the ladder out so often to replace bulbs that have blown. Now that these bulbs have come down in price, they can payback their extra cost in a very short time (only a couple of months) in terms of lower electricity bills.

4.Install energy efficient home appliances. Replacing your old fridge with the most energy efficient models can save you a small fortune on your electricity bills. In fact with the most energy efficient models, the savings can actually add up to cover the entire cost of the new fridge! Plus you can also buy other energy efficient appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers. In the EU all appliances carry an energy efficiency rating, so it is easy to spot the most efficient.

5.Install a solar hot water system. This is the most expensive of the measures mentioned in this article, but still worth doing, even in northern climates. A solar system can provide up to 70% of your hot water needs in a year, saving on your gas bills. Using solar panels mounted on the roof, solar hot water systems can be installed in most houses. This is a tried and tested technology, and you may qualify for a government grant to help with the cost of installation.

By taking these 5 measures, the average householder can save hundreds of pounds a year off their energy bills, and prevent several tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere. Even taking one or two of these steps has a big impact.

Plus for those who want to make an even bigger reduction in their home’s energy use, there are also more advanced measures to be considered such as solar electricity and ground source heat pumps. These generally cost more, but can allow your home to lower even further its impact on Climate Change.

With energy prices set to stay high, and time running out to prevent harmful changes in the earth’s climate, it really does make sense to improve our homes as soon as possible to include these measures. Further information on how to get going is on downwithco2.com.
